ARCS provides confidential and free Legal Advocacy services to victims of domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault.  The purpose of legal advocacy is to explain the criminal justice system, the civil court system, and domestic violence victim's rights.  Legal advocacy also includes the accompaniment of clients to court, the police station, and meetings with legal aid or a private attorney.  In addition, legal advocates provide safety planning, danger assessments, and referrals to services such as counseling, legal representation, VINE, and Ohio Victim's Compensation Funds.

Danger Assessment:

Legal advocates are certified at assessing the level of danger that you may be in based on the abuse that you have experienced.  Contact ARCS Legal Advocates for more information on receiving a Danger Assessment.

Safety Planning:

Your safety is important!  What precautions should you take when planning to leave an abusive relationship?  How do you keep yourself safe once you have left an abusive relationship?  Legal advocates can assist you in devising a safety plan that is catered to your specific needs.

WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACCORDING TO OHIO LAW?

Domestic Violence is when a family or household member uses physical violence, threats, intimidation, and/or emotional, sexual and economic abuse in order to maintain power and control over another family or household member.  Domestic violence is most often a combination of psychological and physical abuse.

Ohio Law has determined that some forms of abuse do not constitute criminal behavior or behavior requiring the court's intervention.  For example, psychological battering, economic abuse, or verbal harassment alone are not recognized by Ohio Law as Domestic Violence that allows a Civil Protection Order (CPO) to be issued or criminal charges to be filed.
